Another Beta- Dropbox
0Yeah, I’ve been in a beta-spur as of late, and the latest is Dropbox, an online storage solution that syncs folders across computers with online access. I have 10 invites. Anyone want one?
Book of ze week
0In between doing finals, random work on my sites and my actual job, I’ve been attempting a new little exercise for myself- read a new book every week. The book can be of any genre, it just has to be a book that can get me reading and relaxing for a bit. It helps to sit outside and read for a little bit after doing heavy work on the computer and i need to get my eyes away from the computer every so often. It helps to work in a library- more often than not, I will spot books that I want to read, stash them away, and check them out at the end of the work day.
I don’t get any late fees working at the library, so I accumulate more than twenty books at a time on my account. My family is aware of this, and constantly hound me to check out books for them, knowing that there wouldn’t be any consequences if they were late. My library is also an excellent source for DVDs and documentaries- there aren’t any fees associated with the checkout themselves, I can’t help myself to check out Ken Burns documentaries when they’re available. But anyways! Here’s some of the books that I have read or are on my list:
Jokes My Father Never Taught Me by Rain Pryor – This is a book written by one of Richard Pryor’s daughters and her life growing up as a half Jewish, half Black girl with half brothers and half sisters all over the place, bringing in an interesting view of the famous black comedian and his own personal life. It was well known that his own life was tumultuous- being the son of a prostitute and his grandmother the madam of a string of whorehouses- but to find it through the eyes of his daughter and her own story makes it utterly fascinating to me. The book was rather short to me, but it’s damn interesting to read, especially Rain’s experience with her father in his later years.
A Practical Guide to Racism by C.H. Dalton – As serious as this book sounds (and looks, just click on the link to see the front page), the overblown racism and insults found in this book can only be taken as a farce to regular textbooks, with the explanation of the mexican mind shown as a soccer ball. Nothing for this should be taken seriously in this book- but it’s fun to read a book so deep in sarcastic humor.
Snuff by Chuck Palahniuk – I mentioned this book briefly before, but I’ve gotten to read the book a bit more in depth now, and i have to say, Palahniuk’s depth of grotesque knows no bounds. Different chapters are told through the eyes of each one of the perspective members of the gangbang, varying in age and purpose to coming to the event. I had a laughing fit just reading the parts of the book that describes the pornstar’s previous works as if they were paintings in the Louvre. I have no clue where the book is going, but hell, I’m going to keep reading it.
The Perfect Thing: How the iPod Shuffles Commerce, Culture, and Coolness by Steven Levy – being a budding mac fan, this book was my interesting insight in how the company works, pertaining to the development and the interest to which the iPod first recieved upon its release. Levy writes the book often as a first-person dialouge, as he was one of the first to recieve the small white mp3 player when it was first released in November of 2001. Parts of the book feel at first to be filler for the real content- Levy’s experience with 9/11 and the iPod seems weird at first to read, but as the book goes on, he does an excellent work of tying it all together.
Download Firefox! (and set a world record)
1http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord/
Basically, Firefox 3 is coming out VERY SOON. I’ve been playing with the beta and I’m goddamn happy with it. Less memory leaks, better interface, yadda yadda. So the Firefox crew is trying to set a world record for the number of downloads when it comes out (which is sometime now in June). Guinness is behind the attempt, so head to the link and pledge to download the FF3 when it comes out. Be a part of a world record!
weekly goings on
0It’s another week. As other friends have already finished their school for the summer, I’m gearing up for my finals, a lovely time of late night studying and plotting to sneak in crib notes (I won’t do that, I swear).
One of the strangest things I’ve found out about Facebook is the odd variety of people I have added as friends on there. I have my usual group of friends, the ones I talk to and hang out with, but as being a geek, I have my online friends- people that I’ve met online. It’s a very funny feeling to be talking to a local friend about the other people on your friends list and wondering why i have so many friends from England for some odd reason. The lists feature Facebook implemented helps me in creating lists from different groups of friends- the friends from high school, the friends from my time as a webcomics reviewer, things like that. It’s also so completely strange to find your old high school teacher on it, too. Small world?
I’ve been quietly working on projects at the moment, something I’ve been doing for quite some time now. I own multiple domain names, and trying to come up with what to do with them is something I’ve been thinking about for quite some time now. I have an overall plan on what I want to do with them, which I’ve been calling “Project Blackwatch Plaid”. (The name of the project is actually a reference to a TV show- 10 points to whomever can name it.) Full details will come as we choose to release it, but let’s just say that it won’t be until fall till some of the larger sites will appear. (although I do have my own personal site coming out in the following weeks, so i can have someting to start with.) My own porfolio site is currently being worked on. I’ve never played around with WordPress, but to have a small/medium site that has a straightforward content basis, it’s perfect. I don’t know if I’d build a site that would be so big to use WordPress, but for now, it’s fine for what I have planned for it.
A big switch I’ve done is making my mac switch to OS X 10.5 Leopard. While this not may be big for some, this does bring out the xcode system and dashcode tools to my computer, something I was sorely missing for programing purposes. I want to start learning multiple programming languages, and Objective C is one of them. PHP and MySQL are two other ones. I’m hoping I can start learning some PHP by playing around a bit with the Facebook API. I have a couple of ideas with the Facebook API- first and foremost, being the creation of a couple of mashups with other popular sites. I’m looking forward to what I can pull off with this stuff.
I found Chuck Palahniuk’s latest book, Snuff. I’ve been a fan of his work since Fight Club, and this latest one seems to be as twisted as his other books- something about a giant gangbang and a conversation between Mr. 72, 137, 600 while waiting to be part of… the festivities. Oh so twisted. I love it so. Going to read it over the weekend.
Now it’s time to clean.
skitch (yet another mac app)
0Oh yeah, I’m talking about yet another mac app. I don’t know what it is, but i think the OS X system as a whole has generated so many small, yet great applications for people to use. I’m having fun just trying to figure out how to utilize all the small cool apps that are out there, but there is one in particular I must recommend to those using OS X 10.4- Skitch, especially those artistically inclined folks .
Skitch is a simple sketching program. It doesn’t have all of the crazy details a full featured drawing programs has, but what it does makes it one of my must have mac apps. It’s quick to open, can capture images from your webcam or something on your desktop. then write, draw, type to your heart’s content. Best off, its free. Works rather well with Evernote, which i mentioned briefly before (handwriting recognition in Evernote is getting better and better now.)
Here’s a good tutorial that explains a bit more of the site.
I’m easily found at the Skitch.com site, and a couple of pictures of examples I’m working on, including my eyeOS install i have going (I’m probably going to blab about that later, but i won’t bore you with the details. Here’s a picture of the install:
To which he muses tech crap
0In the end, the Cornstalker forums are completely done. The upgrade itself was relatively short in comparisoin to the preparation and cleanup of the forums. I attempted to prepare myself for this upgrade, but in the end, as well prepared I was, the problems I encounctered were server specific. My original plan was to access the Cornstlker server via ssh- only to find that there was no SSH support to begin with. FTP proved to be worthless- constant timeouts had me banging my head against the table. In the end, a slow http download that took hours was my only choice. I could have skipped the backup, but experience has strengthened m belief in the addage, “Better be safe than sorry”. The cleanup was simple- moving the old foruls to another folder and moving the new forums, creating a search index, so on and so forth were things I prepared for.
What’s next? Well, there are new smilies installed on the forums as requested by the administrators. The PHPBBlog on the frontpage is now broken. If I have the time, I may go back and re-write some of the code so I can get working with the PHPBB3 forums. I doubt it, thought. I’ve been working on CS pro bono so far, as a favor. Aside from the last bits of finishing the forums and the removal of PHPBBlog, I do think my work with the Cornstalkers is done for now- any other work will require compensation of some sort. I’m trying to start a side buisness of website design- at some point, i have to stop taking pro bono work. I won’t rule out working with CS per se, but my responsibilites with CS ended when I was removed from my assistant editor position. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy and worship these guys and gals for their incredible work (and i still read all of their comics), but I have plans of my own at this point.
Projeccts of my own are coming along now. I’ve been looking into grants for one of the projects, but this idea is so grandiose, I would rather get other projects off the ground before I focus on this one. All I have to say for this project would be a TV pilot for a documentary-esque show. I wish I could say more, but alas, my lips are sealed.
I’m also taking a look at the Facebook API. While the whole thing is over-hyped (I am of the opinion that the Facebook value is in a bubble, and will pop in due time) , I find great possibilities for the API in terms of creating mashups. I’m doing all of this while learning PHP as well as some MySQL. Applications and coding may be one of the new parts of the Team Mayhem conduit.
As for Team Mayhem, there are plans. ohoho yes, there are plans.

At the library
0At the library, there’s a poster promoting reading from DC Comics- namely, Barbara Gordon as a librarian, walking past a window that reflects her in her Batgirl costume.
Every time i walk past it, i mutter to it, “Aren’t you supposed to be in a wheelchair, bitch?”
