Free Fifth Element!

So yeah, my big catch of the week- I was able to pick up this copy of the Fifth Element from my work due to the fact that the staff at the library were tired to take care of so many people kept checking it out not knowing it can’t be played in DVD players and how so many people complained. I’m sure as hell not complaining about this though.

Book of ze week

0

In between doing finals, random work on my sites and my actual job, I’ve been attempting a new little exercise for myself- read a new book every week. The book can be of any genre, it just has to be a book that can get me reading and relaxing for a bit. It helps to sit outside and read for a little bit after doing heavy work on the computer and i need to get my eyes away from the computer every so often. It helps to work in a library- more often than not, I will spot books that I want to read, stash them away, and check them out at the end of the work day.

I don’t get any late fees working at the library, so I accumulate more than twenty books at a time on my account. My family is aware of this, and constantly hound me to check out books for them, knowing that there wouldn’t be any consequences if they were late. My library is also an excellent source for DVDs and documentaries- there aren’t any fees associated with the checkout themselves, I can’t help myself to check out Ken Burns documentaries when they’re available. But anyways! Here’s some of the books that I have read or are on my list:

Jokes My Father Never Taught Me by Rain Pryor – This is a book written by one of Richard Pryor’s daughters and her life growing up as a half Jewish, half Black girl with half brothers and half sisters all over the place, bringing in an interesting view of the famous black comedian and his own personal life. It was well known that his own life was tumultuous- being the son of a prostitute and his grandmother the madam of a string of whorehouses- but to find it through the eyes of his daughter and her own story makes it utterly fascinating to me. The book was rather short to me, but it’s damn interesting to read, especially Rain’s experience with her father in his later years.

A Practical Guide to Racism by C.H. Dalton – As serious as this book sounds (and looks, just click on the link to see the front page), the overblown racism and insults found in this book can only be taken as a farce to regular textbooks, with the explanation of the mexican mind shown as a soccer ball. Nothing for this should be taken seriously in this book- but it’s fun to read a book so deep in sarcastic humor.

Snuff by Chuck Palahniuk – I mentioned this book briefly before, but I’ve gotten to read the book a bit more in depth now, and i have to say, Palahniuk’s depth of grotesque knows no bounds. Different chapters are told through the eyes of each one of the perspective members of the gangbang, varying in age and purpose to coming to the event. I had a laughing fit just reading the parts of the book that describes the pornstar’s previous works as if they were paintings in the Louvre. I have no clue where the book is going, but hell, I’m going to keep reading it.

The Perfect Thing: How the iPod Shuffles Commerce, Culture, and Coolness by Steven Levy – being a budding mac fan, this book was my interesting insight in how the company works, pertaining to the development and the interest to which the iPod first recieved upon its release. Levy writes the book often as a first-person dialouge, as he was one of the first to recieve the small white mp3 player when it was first released in November of 2001. Parts of the book feel at first to be filler for the real content- Levy’s experience with 9/11 and the iPod seems weird at first to read, but as the book goes on, he does an excellent work of tying it all together.

weekly goings on

It’s another week. As other friends have already finished their school for the summer, I’m gearing up for my finals, a lovely time of late night studying and plotting to sneak in crib notes (I won’t do that, I swear).

One of the strangest things I’ve found out about Facebook is the odd variety of people I have added as friends on there. I have my usual group of friends, the ones I talk to and hang out with, but as being a geek, I have my online friends- people that I’ve met online. It’s a very funny feeling to be talking to a local friend about the other people on your friends list and wondering why i have so many friends from England for some odd reason. The lists feature Facebook implemented helps me in creating lists from different groups of friends- the friends from high school, the friends from my time as a webcomics reviewer, things like that. It’s also so completely strange to find your old high school teacher on it, too. Small world?

I’ve been quietly working on projects at the moment, something I’ve been doing for quite some time now. I own multiple domain names, and trying to come up with what to do with them is something I’ve been thinking about for quite some time now. I have an overall plan on what I want to do with them, which I’ve been calling “Project Blackwatch Plaid”. (The name of the project is actually a reference to a TV show- 10 points to whomever can name it.) Full details will come as we choose to release it, but let’s just say that it won’t be until fall till some of the larger sites will appear. (although I do have my own personal site coming out in the following weeks, so i can have someting to start with.) My own porfolio site is currently being worked on. I’ve never played around with WordPress, but to have a small/medium site that has a straightforward content basis, it’s perfect. I don’t know if I’d build a site that would be so big to use WordPress, but for now, it’s fine for what I have planned for it.

A big switch I’ve done is making my mac switch to OS X 10.5 Leopard. While this not may be big for some, this does bring out the xcode system and dashcode tools to my computer, something I was sorely missing for programing purposes. I want to start learning multiple programming languages, and Objective C is one of them. PHP and MySQL are two other ones. I’m hoping I can start learning some PHP by playing around a bit with the Facebook API. I have a couple of ideas with the Facebook API- first and foremost, being the creation of a couple of mashups with other popular sites. I’m looking forward to what I can pull off with this stuff.

I found Chuck Palahniuk’s latest book, Snuff. I’ve been a fan of his work since Fight Club, and this latest one seems to be as twisted as his other books- something about a giant gangbang and a conversation between Mr. 72, 137, 600 while waiting to be part of… the festivities. Oh so twisted. I love it so. Going to read it over the weekend.

Now it’s time to clean.

my lame spring break plans (neeerdy)

0

Friday officially started my spring break plans. Which is basically wayy too much.

For one, is to actually get some work done coding. I’ve had a bunch of projects lying around that need to be coded, and i plan to have some work done on them before the week is done. A couple of them is actually going to appear in some form as a facebook app (although i don’t know if i want to publish them or not- i think i might have to wait a bit or have someone else take a look at the codebase before i do anything with it.). I’m also working on learning template protocols for different CMS and blog engines. I already know Joomla 1.0x like there was no tomorrow (I have a couple of skins under my belt for that, none of which i’ve published), but I want to learn more in focus, WordPress, Joomla 1.5, and Drupal.

I do have plans for Cornstalker this week- I’m planning to upgrade the forums from the now antiquidated PHPBB2 to the newest version, PHPBB3. The whole transisition is something that i’m stressed to no end on doing, because the whole move can go wrong in so many ways that I REALLY don’t want to screw it up. That in combination with no ssh access as well as some inexperience on my end has me creating dummy PHPBB2 forums on my own domains and upgrading them in order to get the process down pat. Hopefully, I’ll have the real CG transfer done by the weekend- but that’s just tentative.

But I do have some fun on the side- I have my PS3 back for a bit, so I’m playing Rock Band in anticipation of tomorrow and getting Still Alive on it, as well as playing some rental games and pre-ordering what i know will be my latest addiction- Grand Theft Auto 4. I beat GTA3, GTA:VC, and GTA:SA to almost &90+ completion. I love those games to death, and I think i may go into an almost rabid like state playing the latest installment.

I’m sitting in the computer lab of my college, eager (ha) to start my first week of classes. Most of my friends have all but returned to their respective colleges, and i was probably one of the last to start. I’ve been in a flurry, just continuing the classes i need for my general education courses needed to transfer to other schools. I’ve also started to organize myself a bit better now. I’ve realized that my current system of organziation is woefully lax, and as such, have begun to use my palm pilot a bit more now, as before, i used it as a method to play old school SNES and Genesis games on it (wonderful little emulator called LittleJohn, i think), but with the coming of my mac, i’ve started to sync it more often and keep at least a reasonable schedule on it. I’ve also found myself rather happy with the way i’ve been managing my time and my efforts in the variety of projects i have strewn about. iSync does a wonderful job of connecting itself with the Palm HotSync manager on the Mac, and i can be able to keep my address book now on my mac, my palm pilot, and my cell phone, to boot. Simplicity at its best.

Two sites that i’ve found that have helped me along the way is Lifehacker, an amazing blog with little tricks to help manage your time and your basic way of life, and Plaxo, a retarded sounding networking site. Both have their ups and downs that are remarkable to me and have helped me try to get stuff organized for now. I’ll be using Plaxo to sync my calendar with google calendars so i can have that running about as i’m on the go. I’ve been considering getting my own personal site with its own domain name just in case i need to get some… hub site of sorts together.

‘s own hub site is an excellent example of one for comics, but i want one that would combine my personal and professional work in one simple site. I was thinking about making it as a WordPress site, but i don’t want to abandon LJ. I guess I’ll have to weigh the pros and cons of everything I have so far and see if having my own separate blog would be a good idea. I was thinking of creating a unified RSS feed for everything i have so far, using Yahoo’s excellent Yahoo Pipes, which was used to create the unified Cornstalker Collective feed back in the day. What’s coming out of this, you ask? i have no idea. First off is to learn the new template systems for Joomla 1.5 and for the PHPBB3 forums. From what small glimpses i’ve had so far, it looks like the stuff is relatively easy to use and whatnot, so we’ll have to wait and see on how everything goes.

Got the strangest spam subject ever.
“If your girl cannot be satisfied with your weewee, you have to turn it into a schlong!”
… this is the first time i actually laughed at a piece of spam, outside of those annoying Nigerian prince bullshit that i get once in a blue moon.

So yeah, I just passed my midterms. Or actually, finished all of them exempt for one. That one will be done on Thursday. With that, I can focus on my… final project for english. From one stressful annoyance to another. I am working on a script for my screenwriting class, a romantic comedy, if you can believe it. It was an idea that kept swimming around in my head, and i finally decided to bang it out and get it out of my head sooner or later.

I’m working on a couple of sites. Not sure when they’re done, but I’m banging out content so they’re not bare when they launch.

Having troubles sleeping now and then. Can’t get to bed until say, 12-1 am in the morning. It’s hell waking up in five hours or so.

Family is visiting from Chicago- some I’ve never met before. I get to be my usual wonderful self. With this whole family thing, I’m interested in my geneology. The little tastes I’ve gotten have turned out to be pretty awesome.

Download Saul William’s The Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust! Then buy it. I know i am. The album is a spectacular mix of industrial rock and rap. its wonderful.

It hit me- my 2.4 ghz Pentium 4 machine can no longer be supported by the new games coming out. I’m definitely going back to consoles now.

Rented Manhunt 2 for the Wii. meh. just… MEH.

Meh should be in a dictionary.

I need to beat Phoenix Wright to get the new game coming out.

I bought Ratchet and Clank. It’s wonderful.
